Finding a Financial Balance

24 January 2024

In my previous post I outlined three competing and conflicting beliefs I had come across and indeed experienced, as follows:

(a) I knew a client who’d say that “money is the root of all evil and the best things in life are free”

(b) I have a friend who’s finding life tight, and feels that more money would free them of all their worries and then they could finally be happy

(c) I was lucky enough to meet new clients who explained to me they have found the sweet spot and are comfortable and grateful that the money they have is enough to give them the freedom they enjoy

I think they could be redescribed as follows:

(a) Shying away from money

(b) Chasing money

(c) Balanced

I recently heard someone explain a great metaphor. They said that if you watch a tight rope walker, they don’t have perfect balance. They find balance by constantly shifting their weight from the left to the right, always aiming for the centre, but inevitably always going slightly left then slightly right, constantly correcting.

And I thought this is exactly how I find myself with money. Any one week I may be feeling more like the scenarios of (a) or (b) or (c).  But that’s alright. That’s how balance works. Finding balance is about looking for and working towards neither fear nor greed.

To be in the middle, you need to always shift your weight from one side to the other: looking for the happy medium.
